Ah, piano players who specialize in the standards.
They once dotted the nightlife landscape; now they are as rare as hen’s teeth. I know a few worthy ones in LA and New York…and several that remain on cruise ships.
On September 24, 2018, in Washington, we saw great one.
Ramón Ballvé, at his roost at the classic Prime Rib on K Street.
He is a classically-trained Argentinian who infuses his vast knowledge and skill into brilliant versions of the Great American Songbook. He also swings.
We were so taken that we returned a second night and spent the entire evening at a two-top next to the piano.
Alas, no CD’s.
If you are in DC, don’t miss him. But fair warning – don’t try to stump him.
