Musical history on W 42 St., New York

Walking in New York is the best urban hike for me, and we inevitably encounter places that played a part in the creation of the Great American Songbook.

On the way to Penn Station to take the train to Washington DC, I took AJ through Bryant Park. There one sees Sycamore trees, flowers, all kinds of activities and people just passing by and enjoying an early “Autumn in New York”.

Among the New York skyscrapers near Bryant Park on 42nd Street, there is an important bit of music history. This is where George Gershwin, in 1924, performed the premiere of Rhapsody in Blue.

I was able to record my personal story of this spot as AJ rolled the camera. The premiere was at the Aeolian Hall which was closed in 1926, and is currently a warren of sterile offices; but the aura of Gershwin remains in the space.
